US Coast Gard suspends enforcement of Tier III rules

The non-binding proposal by IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee to postpose enforcement of tier III regulations for sub-500 GT superyachts has been supported by the US Coast Guard. You can read more background to this decision here but in essence the regulations for yachts above 24m with engines between 130-600 kW will now not be enforced until the start of 2024.

“This decision will have a major impact on yachts built under the 500 GT mark,” says Jeroen van der Matten, General Manager Operations at MarQuip. “We can understand that it raises all kinds of questions and we would be happy to share our understanding of the current arrangements and give bespoke advice for your situation.”
