MarQuip refurbishes iconic Talisman C

Delivered in 2011, the 70.54-metre Talisman C has seen very intensive use since her launch, with continuous back-to-back seasons and multiple long passages. This busy schedule took its toll on her systems, and the silencers recently needed to be replaced. Dan Bean, the yacht’s captain, describes the refurbishment experience with MarQuip.

“We’ve certainly got a lot of mileage out of Talisman C,” Dan explains. “Over time, the wear and tear made itself felt, notably on the silencers – things came to a point where we ended up having to repair them every year. Obviously, at that stage, you’re looking for the absolute best of the best to replace them. So we did our homework and went all out to find a company specialised in these types of products with an excellent reputation.”

Obviously, silencers are a crucial element on a luxury yacht of Tailsman C’s pedigree. Fortunately, the search soon bore fruit. “Neither I nor my chief engineer had dealt with MarQuip in the past, but he came to me and said ‘as far as I can tell, MarQuip is the Rolls-Royce of silencers’. Everyone else we spoke to had nothing but praise for them. That was all we needed to hear. We reached out to MarQuip last summer and they sent people out to have a look.

An impeccable job

“Everything went smoothly from start to finish. MarQuip’s engineers were professional and hard-working. We gave them the relevant drawings for the yacht, and they went back to Alblasserdam to organise the production of the new silencers. A little while later they sent technicians with the prefabricated equipment to install it; this proceeded without a hitch and everything fit perfectly. The technicians did an impeccable job and even went the extra mile for us with a few extra details.”

The new silencers have been tested in sea trials, but not yet in full operation during a cruise, as Talisman C went into a drydock immediately after they were fitted. At the time of publication, she will have completed a four-day ocean crossing – her first long passage after the installation – and be well into the season. “My chief engineer is very happy so far at any rate, and, like I said earlier, all the recommendations and feedback point in the right direction. As far as we can tell, this is a first-class product that works like a charm, and we’re expecting the new silencers will serve us well for the coming five to ten years at least,” Dan concludes.
