Maltese Falcon ready for the future

We all instantly recognise the giant 88-metre sailing superyacht Maltese Falcon, and it’s amazing to think that 20 years have now passed since construction began of this iconic vessel. Two decades on, with cooling water problems causing delamination of the GRP silencers/separators, the time had come to upgrade and renew the main engine exhaust system.

That meant it was time for the system integrator experts at MarQuip to step into action. The limited space available onboard had made Maltese Falcon a little noisy when sailing on her engines and we were keen to address this issue and enhance the exhaust system in any way we could. Our decades of experience in wet exhaust systems enabled us to take on the challenge of making the new system a huge improvement on the original both in terms of sound levels and cooling performance.

Staying within the same footprint of the original design, MarQuip engineers managed to modify the internals of the silencer in such a way that the requirements of the owners were fully met. Our system was successfully commissioned as sea trials showcased an even better performance than predicted. Both the yard and the clients were delighted with the unexpectedly high degree of sound attenuation reached with a new exhaust system, one which is sure to pass the test of time for at least another 20 years.
